The Book Shelf

Nourishment isn't only about food, the soul also needs nourishment and I love nothing better than a good book recommendation.  This is especially true for children's books.  Reading is the one non-negotiable skill we have in our house.  I've read two bedtime stories every night to the girls since they could sit up and they stay up at night 'reading' before they switch their lights out and go to sleep.  I can't wait until they can actually understand the words ;-)

On high rotation at the moment we have:

Iggy Peck, Architect (Andrea Beaty)

Young Iggy Peck is an architect
and has been since he was two
wehn he build a great tower - in only an hour -
iwth nothing but nappies and glue

"Good Gracious Ignacious" his mother exclaimed.
That's the coolest thing I've every seen!
But her smile faded fast as a light wind blew past
and she realised those nappies weren't clean!

Ignacious,  my son! What on Earth have you done?
That's disgusting and nasty! It stinks!"

Each Peach Plum Pie (Allan Ahlberg, Janet Ahlberg)

 "Each Peach Pear Plum
I spy Tom Thumb

Tom Thumb in the cupboard
I spy Mother Hubbard"

The Golden Snail (Graeme Base)
The Great Dog Bottom Swap (very popular with boys ;-)

Anna Hibiscus (Atinuke)

Anna Hibiscus was recommended to us the other day and it's been a big hit.  It's a chapter book and it's the first one they've had that's held their attention.  There are about four or five chapters in each book and there are about 5 books in the series. They are written by Atinuke.
